POISON TO POISON FROM THE EDITOR

By now, many of you fans are aware that I am no longer involved with the production of Famous Monsters of Filmland.  Later this year a sequel to my 2000 book LIFE IS BUT A SCREAM! will be published and it will chronicle in detail the people and events that led to that end.  But for now, I want to take this opportunity to make a few short comments about the future.

When the change first occurred, I was certainly disappointed and somewhat angry.  Not so much angry at the change but at the underhanded tactics by certain people who abused their authority and caused a lot of trouble that should not have occurred.  Those matters are still being actively investigated and I believe that eventually we will obtain justice.

In the meantime I have kept busy developing other projects.  I have never concerned myself with what anyone else associated with the monster movie fan scene was doing.  I avoid it simply because I am not impressed and I really have zero interest in what anyone else is doing.  But based on what I have observed, history looks poised to repeat itself.  Older fans will understand what I mean.  I'm sure there are fans who are fascinated by what passes for horror movies today and that's fine.  I, however, have a problem when mediocrity passes itself off as the standard of excellence.  There will always be those who think fast food is a culinary delight.  Likewise there are those who have a discriminating palate for the finer things.

FREAKY MONSTERS will carry on and continue to delight those fans of distinction and especially those new, young fans whose taste buds are just developing.  We at FREAKY MONSTERS have extensive resources of fotos and material -- much of it extremely rare and some never published -- we'll share with you in issues to come.  No one has more to offer in that arena. There is a lot of material I deliberately refrained from using during the past several years while waiting to see how things panned out.   So take heart, classic monster lover! (As long as the current owner isn't still using it, of course!) -- each and every issue of FM (or FREAKYMON, if you prefer) will be 100% classic horror, sci-fi and fantasy and more importantly, each issue will be 100% FUN.

I know there are some who think the old monsters passé and no longer relevent in today's market.  We couldn't disagree more.  But regardless, WE love the old ghouls and the old ghouls will reign supreme here!

And while still in its developmental stages, we have been working on a new horror anthology series for television based on our favorite fright fiends that will be more fun, more innovative and more monstrous than anything ever seen on the scene.  That project has been on the back burner but the time is at hand where we can revisit it.  Watch these pages and future issue of FREAKY MONSTERS for noose and updates.  We can't give you a time frame right now but the boulder is already in play.

After 20 years you know us.  You know what we stand for.  You know what we believe in.  And you know our commitment to quality and innovation.  That tradition will not change.  Some loudmouths have been predicting our demise for over a decade but -- guess what? -- we're still here.  (Not as much can be said of some of them!)

So it's high time to stop lamenting a change.  "A rose by any other name" as William Shockspeare once said.  What you love...what WE love...carries on in a very Freaky new way!

We hope you stick around and grow young with us.  The beast in classic monsters is yet to come.

Sinc-eerie-ly yours,

Ray Ferry
